Worcester, MA participates in Giving Tuesday

posted on
Worcester, MA participates in Giving Tuesday NEW England Cable New NECN news broadcast (NECN: Kristen Carosa) - Two staff members from Worcester Academy were held hostage in the name of charity on Tuesday. Coach Jamie Sullivan and security guard Walter Pope were locked up all day. “It’s a fun activity but it's also going to really good cause,” Sullivan said. Students had to donate to bail them out. The money raised will go to the school's serendipity fund- money that helps students in need. It’s all part of the nationwide initiative Giving Tuesday, a day to think about donating to a nonprofit or charity. “Some of their fellow classmates are kids that really need this fund and the assistance. The fact that they are all chipping in to help each other is really special,” said Kim Stone of the academy. Worcester's Ecotarium didn't hold a fundraiser on Tuesday, but they are encouraging those who stop in to consider helping out the community. It raises awareness - that's the most important part - raising awareness about nonprofits in the community,” said Patricia Crawford of the ecotarium. And while some organizations encouraged people to give, some were on the receiving end. “To receive this many shoes in just one day - it’s incredible for us,” said Beth Butler of Dress for Success Worcester. Dress for Success is a nonprofit that helps women in need. Butler says they received sixty four pairs of shoes Tuesday from local donors. “To know that there are women out there who are supporting us and in turn we will help so many other women in need,” said Butler. Butler says Tuesday’s donations will make a major difference in the lives of others. And at Worcester Academy, they hope to have the same impact on their school community. “It’s really good for our kids to think about giving back - especially to those who are less fortunate than them,” Sullivan concluded. Top-Rated Charity List & #Giving Guide Helps Donors Give Wisely

posted on
Top-Rated Charity List & #Giving Guide Helps Donors Give Wisely Just in time for #GivingTuesday, GreatNonprofits, the largest nonprofit review site (like a Yelp for Nonprofits) has published the 2013 GreatNonprofits Top-Rated List and #Giving Guide. Over 1,400 nonprofits ranging from national nonprofits to local nonprofits are on the list. The Top-Rated List of nonprofits helps donors find worthy charities. With #GivingTuesday only days away, donors and volunteers can leverage this crowd-sourced content to research causes they care about. About the Top Rated List & #Giving Guide Unlike other charity awards, the Top-Rated award winners were selected entirely by people who have had direct experience with the nonprofit . The volunteers, donors and people helped by the nonprofit. This way the charities get valuable feedback from the public they serve. And with community feedback on the rise, what better way to understand the nonprofits and charities making a difference on the ground than from the people who experience it. The reviews often come in the form of inspiring stories, like this one about Wreaths Across America, an nonprofit serving Veterans: “I did not know about WAA until I lost my precious husband in 2008. God laid the program right in my lap, and it has been a blessing. To work all year long on a program to honor our fallen heroes and veterans is a blessing by itself. But to be part of a program that brings almost 4000 people together thrills your heart. WAA is a program that cannot be described in few words... blessing...thanks...love...sharing...tribute...dignity... honor...memories...all come to mind. It is definitely a program of LOVE!” For more heart-warming stores, see the complete list of Top-Rated charities. How GreatNonprofits is Leveraging the List to Promote #GivingTuesday In collaboration with #GivingTuesday, every day leading up to December 3, GreatNonprofits.org is tweeting and posting about a different issue. There are 32 issues in total such as animals, the environment, women’s issues, education, health, art and more. So users can sort by causes they care about. And, with over 5,500 city and issue pages, donors and volunteers can find charities in their cities; whether that’s New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco or even suburbs like Mountain View, California. How Can You Take Advantage? There are two ways to take advantage of this resource. First, GreatNonprofits has created a Marketing and Social Media kit that nonprofits can download as well as a blog post. This covers useful information about how to leverage reviews and the GreatNonprofits platform to stand out in the crowd. Secondly, individual donors or volunteers can either use the Top-Rated List and #Giving Guide to find nonprofits, or to tell people about a nonprofit they love by writing a review. About GreatNonprofits.org With over 1.5 million nonprofits in the United States alone, how do donors and volunteers find out which charities are making a difference? GreatNonprofits offers a free, easy to use website and tools that allows nonprofits to get feedback and hear the real stories of the community they serve. GreatNonprofits is like a Yelp of nonprofits, currently providing nearly 200,000 reviews. GreatNonprofits has received media coverage in the LA Times, Wall Street Journal, and partners with HuffingtonPost. Read More

Lakeside Chautauqua Raises $105,000 during their first #GivingTuesday

posted on
Lakeside Chautauqua Raises $105,000 during their first #GivingTuesday The outpouring of community support was overwhelming for Lakeside Chautauqua's first #GivingTuesday initiative, raising nearly $105,000.   On December 3, the Lakeside community came together and gave back in a meaningful way, making #GivingTuesday 2013 a truly 'one of a kind' day.      In November, Lakeside Chautauqua introduced stakeholders to #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving encouraging individuals and families to celebrate generosity in their communities and inspiring donors to give back in unique ways.    All the way from Ireland and across 14 U.S. states and 60 Ohio cities, a total of 148 gifts were received in support of Lakeside Chautauqua's mission. Together, the community raised $80,000 towards the restoration of Bradley Temple and children's programing improvements, with two families each stepping forward with $25,000 gifts.    Additionally, gifts totaling $25,000 were received in support of the Lakeside Chautauqua Endowment, Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, recreational programming and facilities, religious life programming, youth group housing and Ohio's Most Beautiful Mile beautification project. Gifts were also made in honor and memory of loved ones.   Joining the #GivingTuesday movement, more than 16 families and individuals gave back to Lakeside Chautauqua for the very first time. #GivingTuesday also marked 25 years of consecutive giving for four special Lakeside families and 29 consecutive years for two more.    Because of your generosity, the community has raised more than $500,000 to date for the Lakeside Fund . While we still must raise additional funds, we are well on our way to achieving a record annual fund goal of $700,000 in 2013.   The Lakeside Fund annual giving campaign bridges the gap between earned income and the actual cost of producing our signature Chautauqua program, maintaining our beautiful grounds and preserving our historic structures.   Regardless of size, each gift given on #GivingTuesday helps to transform lives by providing opportunities for renewal and growth, nurturing mind, body and spirit.   Collectively, these gifts enrich the Lakeside Chautauqua experience for all. We are most grateful for the generosity of the Lakeside Chautauqua community as we celebrate the significant success of #GivingTuesday 2013.     Read More

What is TUFF?

posted on
What is TUFF? Trans United with Family and Friends (TUFF) aims to provide access to healthcare, transition services, safe housing and education for the underserved transgender population. TUFF offers individualized case management by pairing recipients to programs tailored to their specific needs. By focusing on the healthcare aspect of each recipient, TUFF also helps improve other aspects of their lives. TUFF holistically looks at the needs of each person, believes that if one area of someone’s life improves, so will others.  Our applications require essays from applicants, asking them about their goals in life. It is important that when we give individuals aid, they are able to in turn help themselves and others in the future. A 30-year-old female to male transgender individual wrote this in his essay: “ I want to be happy in my own skin. I’m passionate about learning and kids, I nanny on occasion normally special needs kids with mental and medical issues they bring joy to my life and I try to bring joy to their lives. I want to start school this fall so couple months away, to become a fire fighter/ emt first responder at my local college MCTC. I also would like to become a productive member of society not someone who feels alone and eventually an advocate for glbt youth.. My Dreams…I dream to have surgery this year. I will be 30 years old in November and 4 years on hormones.. I dream of being truly happy and confident again.. I would love to play at parks and go camping and swimming with my nephews and friends without making excuses of why I can’t and see their smiles instead of a bummed face because I said I can’t. My hope is you can help me make my dreams come true so I can pay it forward in time.” As of this moment, TUFF has had funding and assistance requests from over 249 individuals. Many of them are living on government assistance, do not have a permanent residence and have no access to healthcare. They have stated the reason for their struggles is that they cannot afford to transition, and therefore face job discrimination and have a hard time finding employment. For example, a male to female applicant of TUFF has stated that they have been unable to find employment since living full-time as female, mostly because her outward appearance does not match her documents (which she cannot change in her state without surgery). She is living on her last of her savings, and is terrified that she will be homeless in the next month. Imagine how much of a difference TUFF can make in these individuals lives if we had the resources to do so.  By helping to aid in transition and costs of living, TUFF will give hope to the individuals receiving its assistance.  Hope is one of the most powerful tools in helping someone be able to wake up every day and continue living their life. About one-third of the applicants have no other options to find help and access to healthcare, schooling, safety and shelter and are at very high risk of suicide, homelessness and financial distress. This is the time the transgender movement really needs to be most impactful, as the community is constantly losing members due to suicide because of the challenges previously mentioned. TUFF will be at the forefront of this movement by providing resources and options for these individuals that will help them survive as well as thrive.  You can help end the suffering and injustice our community faces. Share TUFF and it's story, and reach out to transgender individuals in your own community. YOU can make a difference.    Read More
